As a showbiz media cover who wrote some articles for Wazzup.PH and Astig.PH, I mostly covered Abs Cbn blogcons but I was so happy when I found out I will be able to see LeaSalonga and Janina Vela at the I dare to dream Press Conference. This was also the first time I saw Japs aka Julie Ann San Jose.

She seemed like an ordinary star to me though she sang really well.

So after I witnessed a special trait she had, I researched more about her before I go into that.

Here are some information about her from Wikipedia.

Julie Anne Peñaflorida San Jose (born May 17, 1994) is a Filipino singer, actress, model composer and television personality. San Jose is a recipient of the “Diamond Record Award” from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry for her album Julie Anne San Jose which sold more than 150,000 units in the Philippines[2] Her second album entitled “Deeper” also gave her a Triple Platinum Award for reaching sales of more than 45,000 units in the Philippines.

Simply referred to as MYJAPS, made a significant mark in the online world with uStream sessions and YouTube covers that exceeded millions in views. Her cover of Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass views are more than 20 million.

Career

Early career: 2005–2009

At the age of three years, San Jose had her first TV experience when she joined Eat Bulaga!‘s “Little Miss Philippines”.[3] She also competed in Magandang Tanghali Bayan,’s Munting Miss U where she won third runner-up.[4] She also appeared in a TV advertisement with Sharon Cuneta.

Popstar Kids / Sugarpop

San Jose did not pursue show business until 2005, when she joined Popstar Kids, a singing competition in QTV 11 (now GMA News TV) hosted by R&B singer-songwriter Kyla. Although San Jose did not win the grand prize, she became part of Sugarpop, the show’s spin-off child singing group composed of her co-finalists Rita De Guzman (then known as Rita Iringan), Pocholo Bismonte, Renzo Almario, and Vanessa Rangadhol. Sugarpop released two studio albums, Sugar Pop and Sugar Pop Repackaged. The group also had a show on QTV 11 entitled Planet Q, where a young San Jose and her group mates showcased their hosting abilities. Sugarpop also performed weekly on the GMA-7’s variety show, SOP.[5]

In 2008, San Jose made her acting on GMA‘s afternoon soap Gaano Kadalas and Minsan? where she played a supporting character to Camille Prats and Marvin Agustin.

Rise to stardom: 2010–2011

When SOP ended in 2010, San Jose joined its replacement show Party Pilipinas as a solo artist. As she evolved as a performer, San Jose was able to showcase her singing, dancing, and acting abilities onstage. San Jose was also paired with a then-budding artist and son of rapper, Elmo Magalona. Collectively, they were known as the musical tandem JuliElmo.[6] While in Party Pilipinas, JuliElmo starred in five short films, the Red Mask Trilogy and Yellow Note 1 and 2, and the short musicals, Blue Jeans The Musical (2011), Elmo and Julie Anne: A Wazak Love Story (2012), and Status: It’s Complicated (2013).[7]

San Jose became more visible on the television scene. She was included as one of the support casts in the GMA Network shows’ Andres de Saya and Daldalita.[8][9]

Multimedia artist: 2012–present

In February 2012, San Jose signed an exclusive recording contract with GMA Records.[10] Six months later, in August 2012, she released her eponymous debut album, Julie Anne San Jose, which later received numerous awards and is now a certified Diamond Record awardee. Her single, “I’ll Be There”, remains the only single certified quadruple platinum by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI).[5] Currently, San Jose has released four singles from her album.[11]

After having multiple support roles, in 2012 San Jose finally landed a lead role through the youth oriented weekly show Together Forever. She played the role of Antoinette Escueta, more popularly known as Toyang, a boyish daddy’s girl who fell in love with her best friend.[12]

In 2012, Julie Anne debuted as a movie actress through GMA Films‘ romantic summer film Just One Summer opposite her JuliElmo partner Elmo Magalona. She played the role of Maria Bettina “Beto” Reyes Salazar also sang the movie theme song “Bakit Ba Ganyan?” which was originally popularized by Dina Bonnevie. The film was directed by Mac Alejandre.[13]

In 2013, San Jose had her first major solo concert at the Music Museum in Greenhills, San Juan City. This birthday concert entitled Julie Anne: It’s My Time was a success with tickets sold out just five days after going on sale. Guests include the dance crew Addlib, Fliptop star Abra, Elmo Magalona and multi-faceted performer and good friend, Frencheska Farr. Musical direction was by Marc Lopez and concert director was Rico Gutierrez.[14][15]

San Jose landed more television projects in GMA Network in the following years. She played the lead role in primetime drama series Kahit Nasaan Ka Man where she played a visually impaired but musically talented girl named Pauline Gomez. She was paired with Kristofer Martin who played her love interest. She was also part of the now defunct Sunday musical variety show Sunday All Stars as one of the lead performers. Her hosting skills were also showcased in her stint in the self-titled weekly dance show of Marian Rivera, Marian, alongside her co-host Christian Bautista. She also plays a recurring character named Nikki in Pepito Manaloto who is the love interest of Chito played by Jake Vargas.

In June 2014, San Jose released her second solo studio album, entitled Deeper via iTunes worldwide and spinnr.ph. Her sophomore album under GMA Records received a “Triple Plantinum” award from PARI in January 2016.[2]

In December 2014, following the release of her sophomore album, San Jose had her second major concert entitled Julie Anne San Jose: Hologram at the Mall of Asia Arena. Guests include Sam Concepcion, Christian Bautista, Abra, Jonalyn Viray, and Frencheska Farr.[16][17]

To cap her 2014, San Jose was part of the Metro Manila Film Festival film entry Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2 where she played the role of Stacey. Her co-stars include Dingdong Dantes, Isabelle Daza, Lotlot De Leon, Abra, among many other artists.[18]

San Jose released her digital single “Tidal Wave” which was arranged by Sidney Brown, better known as Omen, an American music producer from Harlem who has worked with artists such as Drake, Lil Wayne, and Ludacris. San Jose filmed three music videos in New York City and California in collaboration with Los Angeles-based company, VIM Entertainment Inc. The videos will be distributed worldwide by GMA Records.[19][20]

Because of achieving a much sexier figure,[21][22] she landed in FHM Philippines “100 Sexiest Women” list, where she ranked #60. San Jose was considered by FHM to pose for their cover along with Coleen Garcia and Nadine Lustre. San Jose also became the cover girl for the August 2015 issue of Preview (an FHM sister magazine) as part of their 20th anniversary.[23][24][25]

In television, San Jose replaced Isabel Oli in GMA News TV‘s Day Off. She is joined by her co-hosts You’re My Foreignay finalist Dasuri Choi and Boobay. With Pia Guanio‘s departure from 24 Oras “Chika Minute” segment, San Jose was given a short stint as interim “Chika Minute” anchor. San Jose was part of the afternoon soap Buena Familiaalongside Kylie Padilla, Julian Trono, and Jake Vargas who is her current on-screen partner.[26][27] She is also part of the newest Sunday variety show Sunday PINASaya together with Marian Rivera, Ai-Ai delas Alas, Alden Richards, Jose Manalo, and Wally Bayola, among many others[28]

On July 2016, she released her third solo studio album, entitled Chasing the Light under GMA Records.[29] Her album release event was held at SM Fairview Mall in the Philippines on July 17, 2016 with crowds of thousands in attendance.[30] The album has been well received and continues to hold the top spot on iTunes PH albums.[31] Chasing the Lightfeatures songwriting and a rap feature from Filipino-American hip hop artist and songwriter C-Tru on the tracks “Don’t Make Me Wait”, “Take Me To Nirvana” and “All About You”.[29][32][33]

Lately, she got the lead role in the afternoon soap Pinulot Ka Lang Sa Lupa as Santina Marquez she was also with Benjamin Alves, Lj Reyes, and Martin Del Rosario. The show ended after its 11th week and currently she is working on her new album under GMA Network.

Affiliations

Julie Anne is one of Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-Aawit’s (OPM) active Junior Ambassadors. Her job as a Junior Ambassador is to represent and promote Filipino Music to the young.[34]

San Jose is also the newest celebrity advocate of World Vision, an international child-focused non-government organization which mainly promotes children’s rights, well-being and education.[35]

Personal life

San Jose disclosed on January 7, 2017 that she has been dating model and actor Benjamin Alves since May 2016. The two had met in one of San Jose’s concerts.[36]

But besides her singing, her being an inspiration to many, and here goes what I observed and many others is this: MyJaps is down to earth and approachable. I took a video of her singing at Megamall for an event which I was not assigned to cover but I covered as an audience at the Taiwan Excellence. I saw her sing 3-4 songs with no dead air. She was taking selfies with the fans while singing but not only that, she even took the extra mile by getting their cameras and taking the shots for them. After I uploaded the video, lots of fans took notice and retweeted it. This is the video where I had the most comments too as well at my Youtubechannel. Title: Merlin is so powerful he can slow down time without even realizing it

- Merlin slowed down during the Black Knight episode and didn’t even realize it. Which is why he was the only one to see Sir Owain stab the knight.

- Merlin used this ability again when the assassin Myror tried to use a spiked lance to stab Arthur during the joust.

- Merlin also likely used it a third time… when he followed Aulfric Tirmawr to the lake of Avalon and allowed his magic to slow down time so he could see the fast moving Sidhe.

One of the things that I find most interesting about this ability and it’s not talked about enough in the fandom… is the different ways in which Merlin can slow down time without a spell.

Most people would think of Merlin slowing down time in the pilot episode, when he slowed Gaius’s descent from the railing after his fall or perhaps when he slowed down the blade thrown at Arthur?

But those are only the beginning.

In the episode, “Excalibur” Merlin accidentally slowed down time during the fight between Sir Owain and the Black knight without even realizing it. He didn’t know he’d done it, until he realized no one had seen the fatal stab wound except him.

In the episode, “The Once and Future Queen” Merlin lets out his magic sweep across the arena and slowed down time in order to see the assassins lance with the deadly spike that slides out.

Yet, on both occasions, no one realized time had slowed.

Even when Merlin slowed down time near the lake of Avalon, the Sidhe (some of the most powerful magical creatures) didn’t sense any change and never suspected his presence.

That’s extremely powerful.

As Merlin watched, the young knight seized his chance. 'One well-aimed blow!' Arthur called from the stands, and there it was - Owain ran his sword through the Black Knight's chest.

Merlin cheered. But to his amazement, no one else took up the cry. What was wrong?

Hadn't they seen what had happened? And why hadn't the Black Knight fallen?

'Should we tend to his wounds?' Merlin said to Gaius as the Black Knight passed them. It wasn't that he cared if the knight was hurt - but it was part of the rules.

Gaius looked surprised, though. 'Owain didn't land a blow?

'He did, Merlin insisted. 'I saw it - Owain's sword definitely pierced him' He wondered then if he had only seen the blow because of his magical abilities - for him, time could slow down. Usually it was deliberate and he could control it, but perhaps as he had been concentrating so hard it had happened all by itself. Anyway, he knew that he hadn't imagined it.

Merlin let the power climb inside him, filling him with fire. The heat rose behind his eyes, giving them a golden glow. Everything slowed as the magic swept across the arena. He saw the spike slide out of the end of the assassin's lance.

Time returned to normal for Merlin. He hurried over to Arthur, catching the prince as he almost fell off his horse, and together they staggered towards the tent.

When I read this post my first thought was “how cute” 🥰 and then immediately it went to a passage I’d read in one of the Merlin books.

I could definitely see Merlin picking out outfits for Arthur when he came back and I’m sure they’d be as comfortable as possible.

Especially, since Merlin can actually feel the texture of the material of things (including clothing) and even judge the weight of it just by reaching out with his mind to the object.

Merlin does exactly that when he uses his magic to pull the tunic down off the bed and over the magic book to hide it.

When I first watched that episode, I mistook it for ordinary Telekinesis (which is the ability to move objects or change their shape using the power of the mind), but clearly if Merlin can feel texture and weight of something his magic touches, then it’s so much more then that.

Basically my point is that Merlin would be able to pick out the absolute best quality of fabric and softest clothing with his magic. 🪄

Arthur is definitely going to get spoiled when he finally returns. 🎁

Headcanon that Merlin buys a new era-appropriate outfit for Arthur around every decade so he’ll have something to change into, but can never bring himself to throw anything out so he’s just got boxes and boxes of clothes (mostly red) from every decade. Also, he only has Arthur’s fashion sense from the 1500s to go on, so he spends ages choosing the outfits specially and imagining what Arthur would like in the new age because he wants to make his transition as comfortable as possible

Title: I think Merlin could have confided in Morgana about his magic (at least in season one), if it hadn’t been for the great dragon trying to speed up destiny and warning him about her unnecessarily

My thoughts: It’s implied that ‘season one’ Morgana wouldn’t have betrayed Merlin’s secret. So if the great dragon hadn’t foreseen the path of her turning evil and warned him prematurely. It might not have even happened.

• Morgana is instinctively drawn towards sorcerers, possibly because of her own magical abilities, feeling a kinship that she may not understand. She has no problem with taking those who practise magic into her care.

- As troubled as Morgana is, she is also kind, passionate and intensely loyal; she wouldn't betray Merlin.

- The great dragon already tried to manipulate Merlin into thinking it was Uther’s time to die in ”A Remedy to Cure All Ills” and it wasn’t. Arthur wasn’t destined to be on the throne yet.

The dragon lied to him, because it wanted to move destiny forward and be freed.

What’s to say the great dragon didn’t turn season one Morgana into a future enemy, by seeing one possible future and that him warning Merlin about her caused them to create a potential rift?

This exact thing is actually mentioned in the hardcover Merlin book, “Valiant”. 🛡️⚔️

Exact quote from the book….

Morgana leaned close to Arthur. “Has your father apologized for not believing you?”

Arthur shook his head. “He'll never apologize!”

After a few moments, Arthur took a deep breath. “I wanted to say ... I made a mistake. It was wrong to sack you?”

Merlin smiled.

Perhaps the king was too proud to admit when he was wrong, but he was glad to see that it was a trait his son didn't share.

Arthur telling Morgana that Uther will never apologize for not believing him and then immediately finding Merlin and apologizing for not trusting him is so *chef’s kiss* I love that from the very start we’re meant to see that Arthur may want his father’s approval but he never wants to be like him

Info: Gaius remembered when a servant about Merlin’s age, ended up in the stocks for four days in the heat with no food or water. 💦 🤕

Paragraph: “Gaius winced as he thought back to a tournament two summers ago when the sword of a visting dignitary had been irreparably damaged. Suspicion had fallen on one of the servants, a young boy not much older than Merlin who had been responsible for stabling the dignitary's horse and ensuring that his belongings, were taken to his rooms.

The poor lad had been completely innocent - the sword had actually been damaged by two of the visiting knights who had been in the stable and, impressed by the quality of the blade, had decided to test its metal against the wood of the stable door.

A badly placed nail had been the culprit that had done the damage, but when the young servant tried to convince Uther that it was the knights who were to blame, the king had flown into one of his terrible rages.

To their shame, the two knights had stayed silent as the young lad had been locked into the stocks and left for nearly four days in the heat of the summer sun without food or water.

Both knights had been soundly beaten in the early stages of the tournament, and Gaius had taken great pleasure in suturing the wounds of one of them, so angry with him that he nearly didn't use any of his usual pain-dulling herbs for the operation. The young servant had left Camelot shortly after, vowing never to retum.”

Book descriptions: Age indicators

Morgana: She was probably about the same age as Merlin, but her refined and aristocratic features made her look older.

Merlin: But some months after Uther's ruling Hunith gave birth to a baby, and soon realized that sorcery was going to play a big part in her life.

So according to the books, Merlin was born some months after Uther banned magic and therefore he’s younger than Arthur (likely a year or year 1/2, given how long Hunith would have been pregnant after Balinor fled to the village).

And Morgana is mentioned in the book to be around Merlin’s age.

So Morgana would have to be younger.

It’s a shame that the core four’s ages are never confirmed in canon. Arthur’s age is the best we get, and even then, it’s not that simple.

The dragon was captured exactly 20 years before Merlin came to Camelot. This means that Arthur is certainly over the age of 20 in 1x01. I’d argue that he should be over the age of 21 if the Purge had not only been going on for some time, but had already progressed into Kilgharrah’s capture by that point 20yrs prior.

If we take each episode as ~1 month (making each season ~1 year long), then Arthur’s birthday being in 1x09 would indicate about 9 months’ difference from 1x01, meaning that — if Arthur is 20 here — he was born only 3 months prior to the dragon’s capture.

This would mean that it only took 3 months for Uther to 1) wage his war, 2) escalate it so severely that Balinor summoned Kilgharrah to make peace with Uther, and 3) manage to capture Kilgharrah in chains specially designed to keep a dragon. This is incredibly unlikely.

I propose that Arthur is actually 21 in 1x01, giving Uther ~1 year and 3 months to wage war and orchestrate Kilgharrah’s capture.

From there, we can guesstimate Merlin’s age, since his birth is a direct result of this event. 20 years prior to 1x01 is when the dragon was captured, and so too was Merlin’s father. Then, he would have spent a period of at least a few months or 1+ years in Ealdor (long enough for him to fall in love with Hunith, and enough to never love another woman like that ever again). Then, he left Ealdor before he could discover Hunith’s pregnancy (i.e. she was not showing).

Accounting for the time Balinor spent in captivity, then the time spent in Ealdor, and of course the 9 months of pregnancy (which would have had some overlap, but small enough that Hunith was not showing), we get a period of at least one year, possibly even 2 years, after the dragon’s capture (again, exactly 20 years before the events of 1x01).

Subtracting 1 year, or 2, or whichever number we decide is most realistic from that 20 year figure, Merlin could be any of a wide range of ages in 1x01. At the oldest, he is a little over 1 year younger than Arthur (21 - 1.5 = 19.5). The youngest he could be is ~16 (based on appearances and relative age, since the numbers alone don’t place a limit on his minimum age) but it’s safe to say he’s at least 17 when he leaves Ealdor. So, 18 or 18 and a half would make for a functional average.

There is little to go off of for the Smiths, but Gwen is likely to be somewhere right between Merlin and Arthur’s ages since she has romantic plot-lines with both. She is likely ~19 in 1x01, older or younger depending on which figures we’re using. Elyan is implied to be younger than Gwen in 5x06 (when he says that Gwen “practically raised [him]”), so he may be Merlin’s age or younger. Only tangentially related, but Gwen says in 3x07 that it’s been 4 years since Elyan left. This places his departure ~6 months prior to 1x01.

As for Morgana, her age is dependent on when Uther slept with Morgana’s mother. Gorlois was off in battle when this happened, so it may have been post-Purge. However, because Morgana’s magic is an inherited trait (as it is with her sister, Morgause) and she and Morgause have the same mother but not the same father, this makes the magic a matrilineal trait in their family. It is highly unlikely that Morgana’s mother — a woman with innate magic — would have slept with Uther during the Purge. It was likely pre-Purge, and at least a year before Arthur’s birth.

Furthering the latter possibility, Uther having a child out of wedlock would be the evidence he needs to confirm the reason he has no child with his own wife (only his best friend’s wife): Ygraine is the infertile one. (Uther, on the other hand, is a little too fertile for his own good).

Compiling the timelines of these events, with enough time passing for the conception of Morgana to be realized, enough time for Gaius to persuade Nimueh to help Uther and Ygraine conceive, and enough time for Ygraine to complete a full 9 month pregnancy, we’re looking at a minimum of ~1 year and a half, but probably 2+ years if Uther and Ygraine looked into other (ineffective but time-consuming) fertility options first (via Gaius?).

Therefore, Arthur and Morgana might have a good 2 years between them. If Arthur is 21 in 1x01, then Morgana is probably ~23.

So my best guesses for 1x01 ages are:

Morgana: 22-23

Arthur: 21

Gwen: 19-20

Merlin: 18-19

Elyan: 16-18
